Devolution and European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages
The Occitan Nation Party took note of the announcement made in Rennes (Brittany) by the French Premier, Jean Marc Ayrault on Friday 13th December that there would be a new stage in the devolution process and that the ratification of the European Charter for regional and minority languages would be put on the agenda of the National Assembly.
Clearly, it is an attempt by the government to defuse the revolt of Breton ‘red caps’. Their slogan: « Living and Working in Brittany» is equally valid for Occitania, Northern Catalonia, the Basque country, Corsica and Alsace.
The Occitan Nation Party hopes that the devolution bill brought before Parliament in the spring of 2014 will involve the granting of new legislative and tax powers to the regions.
The Occitan Nation Party would also like the French government to face its responsibilities and ratify through a constitutional law the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages (a pledge made by the socialist candidate, François Hollande in 2012).
The Occitan Nation Party supports such a referendum because it is the only means for such a law to be on the statute book.
